Once
the football enthusiasm of Euro 2012 dies down, the sports world will scarcely
have time to catch its breath. Come October, cricket fans everywhere will shift
their notice to Sri Lanka where the fourth ICC T20 contest will be held. To the
inexperienced, that means the International Cricket Council (ICC) will be
holding their bi-annual finals, the ICC World Twenty20, also recognized as the
T20 World Cup. These championship games will bring together 12 teams - 10 ICC member
and two qualifiers - for some exceptional cricket action.
Why
T20 if there are 12 teams, you may ask? Very simply, T20 is the name of the pastime,
not the number of participant. T20 is a type of cricket that was introduced
barely a decade ago in England and Wales. It caught on like wildfire, which is
why the T20 World Cup is much predictable.
Between
September 18 and October 7, 2012, all eyes will be on Sri Lanka, the first
Asian state to host these important cricket games. Previous T20 World Cups were
held in the West Indies (2010), England (2009) and South Africa (2007). The ICC
associate teams that are participating are Australia, Bangladesh, England,
India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and
Zimbabwe; the two qualifiers are Afghanistan and Ireland. The defending
champion is England, who took the cup in Barbados by thrashing Australia in
2010. (India won in 2007 and Pakistan won in 2009.) T20 World Cup 2014 is
scheduled to be played in Bangladesh.
The
format of T20 World Cup 2012 will be alike to the games two years ago. The team
are divided into four groups of three; past the first round, the top eight
teams (two teams from each of the four groups) are divided into two group and
they meet in the surrounding call the Super Eight. After that, the top four team
(two from each group) get together in the semi-finals, and the two winner of
the semis meet in the finals. That last game will be held in Mahinda Rajapaksa
International sports ground in Hambantota.
